Ingredients
For the Roll Ups
- 6 slices fresh white sandwich bread, crusts removed
- 1/2 punnet strawberries, diced small
- 4 1/2 tbsp Nutella
For Coating and Cooking
- 1/4 cup caster sugar (superfine sugar)
- 1 tbsp butter
For Egg Mixture
- 1 large egg
- 2 tbsp milk (full cream or low fat)
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Prepare Egg Mixture: In a bowl with a flat base large enough to accommodate the roll ups, whisk together the large egg, milk, and a pinch of salt until fully combined.
- Prepare Sugar Coating: Spread the caster sugar evenly in a small shallow dish for rolling the cooked roll ups later.
- Flatten Bread: Using a rolling pin, roll each slice of bread flat to make them easier to roll and help them stay securely rolled up.
- Spread Nutella: Spread approximately 3/4 tablespoon of Nutella evenly over each flattened bread slice.
- Add Strawberries: Sprinkle the diced small strawberries along the bottom edge of each Nutella-covered bread slice.
- Roll Bread: Carefully roll up each bread slice from the strawberry edge, sealing the edges with Nutella to keep them closed.
- Heat Butter: Melt the tablespoon of butter in a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat until hot and bubbly.
- Dip and Cook Roll Ups: Dip each roll up into the egg mixture, coating all sides well and shaking off any excess egg, then place gently in the hot pan. Cook the roll ups, turning every minute or so, for about 4 minutes total until all sides are golden brown.
- Sugar Coating: Remove each cooked roll up from the pan and immediately roll it in the caster sugar until evenly coated. Repeat with all roll ups.
- Serve: Serve the Strawberry Nutella French Toast Roll Ups immediately while warm for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- Crust removal helps the roll ups to roll easily without cracking.
- The Nutella acts as a glue to keep the bread rolled.
- Rolling the bread thin helps cooking and ensures a tender texture.
- You can substitute strawberries with other fresh fruits like bananas or raspberries.
- Adjust sugar to taste or use powdered sugar as an alternative coating.
- Serve with syrup or whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat.
