Ingredients
Chocolate Cake
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients required to make the cake, as per box instructions)
Oreo Pudding Layer
- 2 packages Instant Oreo pudding (4.2 ounces each)
- 4 cups 2% milk
Topping
- 8 ounces Cool Whip
- 1 cup crushed Oreo cookies
Instructions
- Prepare and Bake Cake: Preheat your oven and prepare the chocolate cake batter according to the box directions. Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan and pour in the batter. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Poke Holes in Cake: Remove the cake from the oven and, while it is still warm, use the end of a wooden spoon to poke holes about 1 inch apart throughout the entire cake. This allows the pudding to soak into the cake for maximum flavor and moisture.
- Make Pudding Mixture: In a medium bowl, whisk together the instant Oreo pudding mixes with 4 cups of 2% milk. Whisk thoroughly to remove lumps. Let the mixture sit for about 2 minutes until it thickens slightly but is not fully set.
- Pour Pudding Over Cake: Pour the slightly thickened pudding mixture evenly over the warm cake, allowing it to seep into the holes. Let the cake cool for a few minutes at room temperature.
- Chill Cake: Place the cake in the refrigerator for about an hour to set the pudding layer fully.
- Add Toppings: Once the cake has set, spread 8 ounces of Cool Whip evenly over the top. Finally, sprinkle 1 cup of crushed Oreo cookies over the Cool Whip layer. If you plan to store the cake, only add the crushed Oreos to the portion you plan on eating immediately to prevent sogginess.
Notes
- Use the ingredients specified on your cake mix box to prepare the cake batter.
- For best results, use instant pudding mix rather than cook-and-serve pudding.
- Do not let the pudding mixture set completely before pouring over the cake; it should be slightly thickened.
- The crushed Oreos can become soggy if left on the cake for too long before serving; add them just before serving if storing the cake.
- This cake is best served chilled and can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
