Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef (93/7)
- 3 tablespoons toasted sesame oil (divided)
- 2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 2 tablespoons ginger paste
- 1 bunch green onions (divided: roots and green tops)
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce (all purpose, not lite)
- 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon light brown sugar (lightly packed, plus more as needed)
- Optional garnish: sesame seeds
Serving Suggestions
- Cooked white or brown rice
- Steamed vegetables
- Asian-style noodles
Instructions
- Brown Beef: Separate the white roots from the green tops of the green onions. Thinly slice the roots and cut the green tops into 1-inch pieces. Heat a large nonstick pan over high heat and add 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, swirling to coat the pan. Once the oil is hot, place the ground beef in the center, pressing it down. Allow it to sear for 1 minute on each side without stirring to get a nice crust. Then, break the meat into crumbles with a wooden spoon and cook until it is mostly browned.
- Add Aromatics: Reduce the heat to medium-high. Add 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, the white parts of the green onions, minced garlic, and ginger paste to the pan. Sauté with the beef until the meat is fully browned and any liquid has evaporated, infusing the beef with deep flavor from the aromatics.
- Make Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and chicken broth until smooth. Stir in the remaining 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, hoisin sauce, light brown sugar, soy sauce, and red pepper flakes if using. Whisk until fully combined and the sauce is smooth.
- Finish: Pour the prepared sauce along with the green tops of the green onions into the pan with the beef. Stir continuously to evenly coat the beef and cook the sauce until it thickens, glazing the meat with a luscious, savory-sweet finish. Optionally, garnish with sesame seeds.
- Serve: Serve the Mongolian ground beef immediately over cooked rice or alongside your favorite sides for a quick, flavorful meal that everyone will love.
