Ingredients
Sauce
- ½ cup coconut aminos
- 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 5 garlic cloves, minced (about 2 1/2 tablespoons)
- 1 tablespoon grated peeled fresh ginger (or 1 teaspoon ground ginger)
- ½ teaspoon Chinese 5-spice powder
Main
- 1-2 teaspoons avocado oil, coconut oil, or olive oil
- 8 green onions, sliced; white/light green and dark green parts separated
- 1 pound lean ground chicken or turkey (93% lean / 7% fat)
- 2 (12-ounce) bags broccoli slaw mix or coleslaw mix
Optional Toppings
- Black sesame seeds
- Sriracha
- Sliced avocado
- Fresh cilantro leaves
Instructions
- Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, combine the coconut aminos, toasted sesame oil, rice vinegar, minced garlic, grated ginger, and Chinese 5-spice powder. Whisk thoroughly to blend all the flavors, then set the sauce aside for later use.
- Sauté green onions: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add your choice of oil (avocado, coconut, or olive oil) and swirl to coat the bottom evenly. Add the white and light green parts of the sliced green onions and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften and become fragrant.
- Cook the ground chicken: Add the lean ground chicken (or turkey) to the skillet. Using a large wooden spoon, break the meat apart and cook for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring gently and occasionally until the meat is fully cooked through and no longer pink.
- Add broccoli slaw and sauce: Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the broccoli slaw mix along with the prepared sauce into the skillet. Cook everything together for 6 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the slaw is crisp-tender or reaches your preferred texture.
- Finish with green onion tops: Stir in the dark green parts of the sliced green onions to add freshness and color. Remove the skillet from heat once everything is well combined and cooked to your liking.
- Serve and garnish: Spoon the egg roll mixture into bowls and top with optional garnishes like black sesame seeds, sriracha sauce, sliced avocado, and fresh cilantro leaves for added flavor and visual appeal.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey for ground chicken if preferred.
- Chinese 5-spice powder adds authentic flavor but can be omitted if unavailable.
- Use broccoli slaw or a coleslaw mix with shredded cabbage and carrots as a crunchy vegetable base.
- Adjust the cooking time of the slaw to keep it crisp or more tender according to your taste.
- This recipe is naturally gluten-free when using gluten-free coconut aminos.
- For a spicier dish, increase the amount of sriracha or add chili flakes in the sauce.
