This classic Chicken Parmesan recipe features tender, breaded chicken cutlets cooked to golden perfection in a skillet, topped with savory marinara sauce and melted mozzarella cheese. Perfect for a comforting weeknight dinner, this dish is flavorful and easy to prepare in just 22 minutes.

  • Total Time: 22 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 1.5 lbs)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Freshly cracked pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Breading

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Freshly cracked pepper, to taste

Batter and Coating

  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

Cooking

  • 1/4 cup cooking oil
  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Garnish

  • 1 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Filet: Use a sharp knife to carefully filet the chicken breasts lengthwise into two cutlets each, making a total of 4 cutlets. Alternatively, use pre-cut chicken cutlets for convenience.
  2. Season: Lightly season both sides of each chicken cutlet with salt, freshly cracked pepper, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder to enhance flavor.
  3. Combine: In a wide shallow bowl, mix together the breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and freshly cracked pepper to prepare the breading mixture.
  4. Whisk: In a separate shallow bowl, whisk the egg until fully blended for the egg wash.
  5. Add: Place the all-purpose flour in a third shallow bowl to use as the initial dredging agent.
  6. Dredge: Coat each chicken cutlet lightly with flour, shaking off the excess, then dip into the beaten egg ensuring full coverage. Finally, coat the chicken thoroughly with the seasoned breadcrumb mixture on both sides.
  7. Cook: Heat the cooking oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until very hot. Add the breaded chicken cutlets and cook for about 5 minutes on the first side until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Flip and Top: Flip the chicken pieces and reduce heat to medium. Spoon 2 tablespoons of marinara sauce over each cutlet and sprinkle with 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese. Cover the skillet with a lid to allow the cheese to melt, the sauce to warm, and the chicken to cook thoroughly for an additional 5 to 7 minutes.
  9. Serve: Remove the skillet lid and garnish the chicken with freshly chopped parsley if desired. Serve the chicken parmesan with spaghetti and additional marinara sauce for a complete meal.

Notes

  • You can substitute pre-cut chicken cutlets to save time.
  • Ensure the oil is very hot before adding chicken to achieve a crispy coating.
  • Covering the skillet during melting allows the cheese to fully melt and the chicken to cook evenly.
  • The dish pairs well with spaghetti or a fresh salad for a balanced meal.
  • Fresh parsley adds a bright, fresh flavor but is optional.
