Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups (283g) all-purpose flour (scoop and level to measure)
- 2 tsp granulated sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
Wet & Fat Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cold and diced into small cubes
- 1 cup (235ml) buttermilk
Add-ins
- 1 cup (4 oz) Cache Valley Creamery Shredded Triple Cheddar Cheese
- 3 Tbsp chopped fresh chives
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit and line a rimmed 18 by 13-inch baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients and Cut in Butter: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Add the cold, diced butter and use a pastry cutter or fork to cut the butter into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse meal with pea-sized crumbs.
- Add Cheese and Chives: Toss in the shredded cheddar cheese and chopped fresh chives to the flour-butter mixture, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- Incorporate Buttermilk: Pour the buttermilk into the bowl and gently toss until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix to keep biscuits tender.
- Form Drop Biscuits: Using a 1/4 cup measuring cup (lightly heaping), scoop the dough. Run a butter knife around the edges inside the cup to loosen the dough, then shake it out onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing the biscuits evenly.
- Bake Biscuits: Repeat scooping and dropping the dough until you have 12 biscuits on the sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
- Serve Warm: Remove the biscuits from the oven and serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Make sure the butter is very cold for a flaky biscuit texture.
- Do not overmix the dough once buttermilk is added to avoid tough biscuits.
- For a sharper flavor, use extra sharp cheddar cheese.
- Fresh chives provide a mild onion flavor; you can substitute with green onions if fresh chives are unavailable.
- These biscuits are best served warm but can be reheated in an oven to retain flakiness.
