Butterfinger Puppy Chow is a delightful and crunchy snack mix featuring Rice Chex cereal coated in a luscious blend of melted chocolate, peanut butter, and butter, then mixed with crushed Butterfinger candy bars and dusted generously with powdered sugar. This sweet, crunchy treat is perfect for parties, movie nights, or anytime you want a tasty, easy-to-make snack.

  • Total Time: 11 minutes
  • Yield: 14 servings

Ingredients

Snack Mix

  • 7 cups Rice Chex Cereal (store brand version)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter
  • ¼ cup salted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
  • 18 fun size Butterfinger candy bars (15 crushed and 3 roughly chopped for garnish)

Coating

  • 1¼ cup powdered sugar (sifted)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cereal base: Add the Rice Chex cereal to an extra-large bowl, making sure you have enough space to mix all the ingredients thoroughly.
  2. Melt chocolate mixture: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, peanut butter, and salted butter. Microwave on high for 1 minute, then stir well until the mixture is fully melted and smooth.
  3. Add vanilla flavor: Stir in the vanilla bean paste until the chocolate peanut butter mixture is well combined.
  4. Coat the cereal: Drizzle the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal and gently stir to coat every piece evenly.
  5. Incorporate crushed Butterfingers: Stir in the 15 crushed Butterfinger candy bars, mixing them evenly throughout the coated cereal.
  6. Add powdered sugar coating: Sprinkle the sifted powdered sugar over the coated cereal mixture and stir thoroughly. Alternatively, transfer the mixture to a large 2-gallon ziplock bag and shake well to evenly distribute the powdered sugar while containing the mess.
  7. Dry and garnish: Spread the coated Puppy Chow on a baking sheet to dry. Just before serving, sprinkle the 3 roughly chopped fun-size Butterfinger candy bars on top as garnish for added texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Using a large ziplock bag to coat the Puppy Chow with powdered sugar helps minimize mess and makes cleanup easier.
  • Ensure cereal is evenly coated but handle gently to avoid crushing it.
  • Store leftover Puppy Chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
  • You can substitute vanilla bean paste with vanilla extract if needed.
  • For a gluten-free version, confirm that your Rice Chex cereal and Butterfinger candy bars are gluten-free.
