Ingredients
Wet Ingredients
- ¾ cup unsalted butter
- 3 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste
- 1 cup over-ripe mashed bananas (about 2 medium bananas)
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
Chocolate
- ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips (for sprinkling)
Instructions
- Prepare baking pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9 x 9 x 2-inch square baking pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy removal.
- Mix butter and sugars: In a large bowl, use an electric hand mixer or a whisk to cream together ¾ cup unsalted butter with 1 cup granulated sugar and ½ cup brown sugar until smooth and well combined.
- Add eggs and vanilla: Beat in 3 large eggs one at a time, followed by 2 teaspoons of vanilla bean paste, mixing thoroughly after each addition to create a cohesive batter.
- Combine dry ingredients: Stir in ¾ cup all-purpose flour and ½ teaspoon salt into the wet mixture just until combined, being careful not to overmix to maintain tenderness.
- Prepare banana mixture: In a separate medium bowl, mash 1 cup of over-ripe bananas and sprinkle ½ teaspoon baking powder over them, stirring to blend evenly.
- Mix half batter with bananas: Add half of the previously prepared batter into the banana mixture and gently stir until fully incorporated; set this banana-batter blend aside.
- Create chocolate batter: To the remaining half of the batter, add ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder and ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips, stirring until the chocolate is well distributed.
- Assemble the layers: Spoon dollops of about half of the chocolate batter unevenly into the lined pan; it doesn’t need to cover the entire bottom. Pour the banana batter evenly over the chocolate batter, then drop spoonfuls of the remaining chocolate batter on top.
- Swirl and top: Using a knife or skewer, gently swirl the banana and chocolate mixtures together to create a marbled effect. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of semisweet chocolate chips on top for added texture and flavor.
- Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached. Remove from oven and let cool completely in the pan before slicing into 16 squares for serving.
Notes
- Use over-ripe bananas for the best natural sweetness and moisture.
- Be careful not to overmix the batter to maintain a tender texture.
- Allow the brownies to cool fully before slicing to prevent crumbling.
- You can substitute vanilla bean paste with pure vanilla extract if unavailable.
- For a nuttier variation, add chopped walnuts or pecans to the batter before baking.
