These Perfect Homemade Biscuits are soft, fluffy, and buttery with golden tops and tender layers inside. Made from scratch in just 15 minutes, they’re ideal for breakfast or as a side to any meal.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 12 biscuits

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 3/4 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and cream of tartar.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter until pea-sized pieces remain throughout the flour mixture.
  4. Add the milk and egg, mixing just until combined. The dough will be sticky, and visible butter pieces should remain.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a generously floured surface. Sprinkle the top with flour to prevent sticking and knead 10–15 times.
  6. Pat the dough to 3/4–1 inch thickness. Cut biscuits with a cutter or glass.
  7. Place biscuits on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 10–15 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
  9. Optional: Brush the tops with melted butter for added flavor.

Notes

  • For the best texture, use very cold butter and handle the dough minimally.
  • If dough is too sticky, add flour gradually until manageable.
  • Leftover biscuits can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days or frozen for later.
