Ingredients
- For the Beef Patties:
- 680 grams lean ground beef
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- For the Sandwich Assembly:
- 12 slices marble rye bread
- 3 slices cheddar cheese
- 3 slices Swiss cheese
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 Vidalia onions, thinly sliced
- ½ cup secret sauce
- For the Secret Sauce:
- 60 milliliters mayonnaise
- 60 milliliters Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon barbecue sauce
- ½ teaspoon hot sauce
Instructions
- Make the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, barbecue sauce, and hot sauce until smooth. Set aside.
- Prepare the Beef Patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Divide the beef mixture evenly and form into 6 oval-shaped patties of similar thickness.
- Caramelize the Onions: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and golden brown, about 15 minutes. Set aside.
- Cook the Beef Patties: Heat a separate skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the beef patties for 2 minutes per side, until browned but still juicy. Remove the patties and wipe the skillet clean.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Spread a thin layer of butter on the outer sides of each slice of bread. Place the buttered bread slices, buttered side down, on the skillet. On each slice, spread 1 tablespoon of secret sauce, top with 3 tablespoons of caramelized onions, a slice of cheese, a beef patty, a second slice of cheese, more onions, and secret sauce. Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
- Grill the Sandwiches: Cook the sandwiches on both sides over medium heat until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 4-5 minutes per side. Repeat with the remaining sandwiches.
Notes
- If you prefer a spicier sandwich, add more hot sauce to the secret sauce mixture or include some sliced jalapeños on the sandwich.
- For a lighter version, you can substitute lean ground turkey or chicken for the beef patties.
- Serve these sandwiches with a side of fries or a crisp pickle for the ultimate comfort meal.
