Ingredients
- 2 medium-size sweet yellow onions (about 1 pound)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon table salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 extra large egg
- 1 1/2 cups plain panko bread crumbs
- 1 cup plain bread crumbs
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- Prepare the Onions: Peel the outer skin off the onions. Slice the onions into 1/4-inch thick rings and separate the rings.
- Set Up: Line a baking sheet with heavy-duty aluminum foil. Place a cooling rack over the lined baking sheet and another baking sheet with paper towels for the cooked onion rings.
- Heat the Oil: Add vegetable oil to a 10-12 inch skillet over medium-high heat (or set up your deep fryer). Heat the oil to 365°F.
- Prepare the Coatings: In a shallow bowl or pie plate, whisk together flour, onion powder, baking powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. In another bowl, whisk together the milk and egg until well incorporated. In a third bowl, whisk together the panko bread crumbs and plain bread crumbs.
- Coat the Onion Rings: Dredge each onion ring in the flour mixture. Dip the floured onion rings in the milk and egg mixture. Finally, coat them in the breadcrumb mixture. Place the coated rings on the cooling rack.
- Deep Fryer Method: Heat the oil in your deep fryer to 365°F. Add a single layer of breaded onion rings to the fryer basket. Cook for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Repeat with the remaining onion rings.
- Skillet Method: Once the oil reaches 365°F, use tongs to carefully add the onion rings in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the skillet. Fry for 2 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Monitor the heat to avoid burning.
- Transfer & Serve: Transfer the cooked onion rings to the paper towel-lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining onion rings. Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
- For extra crispiness, you can double-coat the onion rings by repeating the coating process.
- If you’re using a deep fryer, make sure the oil doesn’t overflow by not overcrowding the fryer basket.
- For a lighter option, you can bake the onion rings in a preheated oven at 425°F for about 15 minutes, flipping halfway through.
