This Homemade Vegan Hot Dog Recipe features marinated tofu wrapped in spring roll wrappers to mimic the beloved classic hot dog experience, delivering a smoky, savory, and slightly sweet flavor. Perfectly browned and slightly crispy on the outside, these vegan hot dogs are an excellent plant-based alternative ideal for any cookout or quick meal.

  • Total Time: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

For the Vegan Hot Dogs:

  • 1 (14-16 ounce) package extra firm tofu, pressed to remove excess water
  • 1/2 cup tamari (low sodium preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • Liquid smoke (hickory flavored), a few drops
  • 6 small sized spring roll wrappers
  • Hot dog buns, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Remove the tofu from its package, pat it dry thoroughly, and press out as much liquid as possible. Cut the tofu into 6 equal rectangular pieces by slicing vertically and then into thirds. Optionally, trim the edges to create a more rounded, hot dog-like shape.
  2. Make the Marinade: In a ziplock bag or a small container, combine tamari, maple syrup, smoked paprika, toasted sesame oil, grated garlic, grated ginger, and a few drops of liquid smoke. Mix well until fully blended.
  3. Marinate the Tofu: Submerge the tofu pieces in the marinade ensuring full coverage. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight, turning occasionally for even absorption of flavors.
  4. Soften the Wrappers: Pour about one cup of water mixed with a few drops of liquid smoke into a wide, shallow bowl. Soak each spring roll wrapper individually until soft and pliable, handling them gently to avoid tearing.
  5. Wrap the Tofu: Place one marinated tofu piece in the center of a softened spring roll wrapper. Carefully fold the edges up and roll the wrapper tightly around the tofu to secure it.
  6. Cook the Vegan Hot Dogs: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and lightly spray with cooking spray. Add the wrapped hot dogs and cook each side for 2-3 minutes until browned and slightly crispy. Near the end, spoon some leftover marinade over the hot dogs and cook for another 30 seconds to achieve a desirable charred flavor.
  7. Serve: Serve the vegan hot dogs immediately in hot dog buns with your favorite toppings for the best texture and flavor experience.

Notes

  • Pressing the tofu well is essential to achieve a firm texture suitable for hot dogs.
  • Marinating overnight infuses deeper flavor, but at least 2 hours is required.
  • Be gentle when softening and wrapping spring roll wrappers as they can tear easily.
  • Cooking times may vary slightly depending on stovetop heat and pan type.
  • Serve immediately after cooking for optimal texture and taste.
