Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- ½ cup panko bread crumbs
- 1 egg
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 beef bouillon cube, crumbled
- 2 teaspoons dry mustard
- ½ tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 3 tablespoons butter, divided
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 6 ounces mushrooms, sliced thick
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef stock (low sodium)
Instructions
- Make the patties: In a medium bowl, combine the ground beef, panko bread crumbs, egg, garlic, ketchup, beef bouillon, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until well combined. Shape the mixture into four oval-shaped patties.
- Sear the patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter. Place the patties in the hot skillet and sear for 2 minutes on each side. (The patties will still be raw in the center.) Remove the patties to a plate and set aside.
- Cook the onions: Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the skillet. Add the sliced onions and reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook the onions for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and caramelized.
- Cook the mushrooms: Add the sliced mushrooms to the onions and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the mushrooms release their juices.
- Make the gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms, tossing to coat. Pour in the beef stock, stirring constantly. Return the patties to the pan, cover, and let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes until the patties are cooked through.
- Finish the dish: Remove the patties to a plate and season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste. Pour the gravy over the patties and serve hot.
Notes
- This dish pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, you can let it simmer for a few more minutes to reduce further.
- For extra flavor, consider adding a splash of red wine to the gravy as it simmers.
