Dutch Apple Pie features a buttery pie crust filled with tender, cinnamon-spiced Granny Smith apples and a luscious sauce, all topped with a crunchy pecan crumb topping. This classic dessert is perfect for holidays and gatherings, offering the comforting flavors of traditional apple pie with an irresistible crumbly finish.

  • Total Time: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Yield: 10 servings

Ingredients

For the Dutch Apple Pie:

  • 1 pie crust (1/2 of a pie dough recipe)
  • 2 1/4 lbs Granny Smith apples (about 6 medium apples)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 8 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar

For the Crumb Topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 8 Tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 375˚F and position one rack on the bottom and another in the center to prepare for baking.
  2. Prepare Pie Crust: Roll out chilled pie dough on a lightly floured surface into a 12-inch diameter circle. Transfer carefully to a 9-inch pie pan, tuck excess dough into the sides, and crimp the edges for a neat finish.
  3. Prepare Apples: Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples about 1/4 inch thick to yield approximately 7 cups. Place them in a large mixing bowl and toss with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to evenly coat.
  4. Make Apple Sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 8 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in 3 tablespoons of flour and simmer for 1 minute while whisking constantly. Gradually whisk in 1/4 cup water and 1 cup granulated sugar, bringing the mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 3 minutes, whisking frequently, then remove from heat.
  5. Combine Apples with Sauce: Pour the warm sauce over the sliced apples and stir carefully until all slices are coated. Transfer the coated apples into the prepared pie crust and spread evenly.
  6. Prepare Crumb Topping: In a bowl, combine 1 cup flour, 1/4 cup packed brown sugar, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add 8 tablespoons room-temperature butter and work the mixture with your hands until pea-sized crumbs form. Stir in 1/2 cup chopped pecans.
  7. Assemble Pie: Evenly spread the crumb topping over the apple filling to cover it completely.
  8. Bake the Pie: Place the pie on the center oven rack and put a sheet of foil on the bottom rack to catch any drips. Bake uncovered at 375˚F for 50 to 60 minutes; about 55 minutes is ideal. If the crumb topping begins to brown too much, tent the pie with foil to prevent overbrowning. The pie is ready when the center reaches 175˚F.
  9. Cool and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 1 hour to allow the filling to set. This makes slicing easier and enhances the texture.

Notes

  • The pie crust can be homemade or store-bought; just ensure it fits a 9-inch pie pan.
  • Use Granny Smith apples for a tart flavor and firm texture that holds up well during baking.
  • Allowing the pie to cool thoroughly will help the filling thicken and prevent it from being too runny when sliced.
  • If you prefer a sweeter pie, you can adjust the sugar in the filling or in the crumb topping accordingly.
  • Chop pecans finely if you want a more subtle nutty texture in the topping.
