Ingredients
- For the Cube Steaks:
- 4 cube steaks (1 ½ pounds)
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- For the Onion Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 large yellow onion, sliced into ½ inch slices
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 cups beef stock
- 1 beef bouillon cube
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- Kitchen Bouquet (optional)
Instructions
- Prep the Steaks: Place your cube steaks on the counter and let them come to room temperature for 15-20 minutes. In a small bowl, mix together paprika, onion powder, granulated garlic, salt, and black pepper. Place the steaks on a cutting board, cover them with plastic wrap, and pound them out to about ¼ inch thickness using a meat mallet or wooden rolling pin. Sprinkle all sides with the spice mixture and 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour.
- Cook the Steaks: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once the pan is hot, add the steaks (you may need to cook in two batches if your skillet is not large enough). Cook for about 3 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.
- Make the Onion Gravy: In the same skillet, lower the heat to medium and add the butter. Add the sliced onions and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until they reach your desired softness. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Sprinkle in the 2 tablespoons of flour and cook for 30 seconds.
- Finish the Gravy: Pour in the beef stock, crumble in the bouillon cube, and stir in the Worcestershire sauce. Add a pinch of Kitchen Bouquet if desired. Let the gravy simmer until thickened, about 2-3 minutes. Return the steaks to the gravy and simmer for another 2-3 minutes until they’re heated through and coated with the gravy.
- Serve: Serve the cube steaks and gravy over mashed potatoes, noodles, or white rice for a delicious, hearty meal!
Notes
- For a lighter option, serve with steamed vegetables instead of mashed potatoes or rice.
- Be sure to adjust the seasoning according to your taste. Add more Worcestershire sauce or salt if necessary.
