These rich and fluffy chocolate waffles are a decadent twist on the classic breakfast favorite, packed with chocolate chips and perfect for weekend brunch or a dessert-like treat any time of day.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 6 waffles

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 large eggs, separated
  • 1½ cups whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream, chocolate syrup, caramel sauce, strawberries

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cocoa. Make a well in the center and set aside.
  2. Separate the eggs. In a medium bowl, beat the egg whites with a hand mixer until fluffy and meringue-like.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Gently fold in the whipped egg whites—it’s okay if the mixture is a bit lumpy.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir with a rubber spatula just until combined; avoid overmixing.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  6. Preheat your waffle iron. Pour batter into the center of the iron using a ladle and cook until crisp, about 4 minutes depending on your waffle maker.
  7. Serve hot with desired toppings like whipped cream, syrup, or fresh berries.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the batter to keep waffles light and fluffy.
  • Egg whites whipped separately add extra airiness.
  • Serve immediately for best texture, or keep warm in a low oven while making additional waffles.
