Ingredients
- 2 lb lean ground beef (90/10 or 93/7 fat content)
- 1/2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 large yellow onion, finely diced
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 8 slices medium cheddar cheese
- 6 oz medium cheddar cheese, shredded (or use more sliced cheese)
- 24 dinner rolls (or 2 packs of 12)
- 2 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted (plus more to grease baking sheet)
- 1 Tbsp sesame seeds
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350˚F. Grease the bottom of a rimmed baking sheet with butter.
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat olive oil and sauté diced onion for 1–2 minutes.
- Add ground beef and break it up with a spatula. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Cook the beef until just cooked through, then remove from heat. Spoon off and discard any excess fat.
- Stir mayonnaise into the cooked beef until well combined.
- Cut dinner rolls in half horizontally. Place the bottom halves on the prepared baking sheet and layer with sliced cheddar cheese.
- Spread the beef mixture evenly over the cheese layer. Press it into a flat, even layer using a spatula.
- Sprinkle shredded cheddar over the beef.
- Top with the upper halves of the rolls, cut-side down. Brush tops with melted butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
- Bake at 350˚F for 12–15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and tops are golden brown.
- Remove from oven, slice, and serve warm.
