A refreshing blueberry lemonade with a perfect balance of tart lemon and sweet blueberry syrup, served chilled with ice for the ultimate summer drink.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  • For the Simple Syrup:
  • 2 cups blueberries
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon lemon zest (for added citrus flavor)
  • For the Lemonade:
  • 2 cups fresh lemon juice (about 810 lemons, depending on size)
  • 2 cups blueberry simple syrup (from above)
  • 8 cups cold water
  • 2 lemons, sliced for garnish
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional: Fresh mint leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the Blueberry Simple Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine 2 cups of blueberries, 1 ½ cups granulated sugar, and 1 cup water. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved and the blueberries have burst open. Optional: Add 1 teaspoon lemon zest to the syrup during simmering for an extra citrusy zing. Remove from heat and allow the syrup to cool for about 20 minutes.
  2. Strain the Syrup (Optional): After cooling, strain the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl, pressing the berries to extract as much juice as possible. If you prefer a chunkier, more rustic lemonade, you can skip this step and keep the berry pulp.
  3. Prepare the Lemonade: In a pitcher, combine the fresh lemon juice, 2 cups of blueberry simple syrup, and 8 cups cold water. Stir well to combine. Slice 2 lemons into 8 wedges and add 4 slices into the lemonade. Stir to incorporate the lemon flavor throughout.
  4. Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the lemonade for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld. Serve the blueberry lemonade in highball glasses filled with ice and garnish each glass with a slice of lemon. For a refreshing twist, add a few fresh mint leaves as garnish.

Notes

  • Extra Sweetness: If you prefer a sweeter lemonade, add an extra tablespoon of sugar to the blueberry syrup during simmering.
  • More Berry Flavor: For a stronger berry taste, increase the amount of blueberries to 2 ½ cups for the syrup.
  • Sparkling Option: For a fizzy twist, top the lemonade with sparkling water just before serving.
  • Non-Alcoholic Cocktail: You can also add this blueberry lemonade to sangria or serve it as a refreshing base for mocktails or cocktails.
