Ingredients
- Apple French Toast Casserole:
- 8 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (or fat-free half and half)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 cups apple pie filling (or one 20 oz can)
- 16 ounces French bread, cubed and dried
- Topping:
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, vanilla, and cinnamon.
- Stir in the cubed French bread and apple pie filling until bread is well coated.
- Pour mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
- In a separate bowl, use a pastry cutter or two forks to combine brown sugar, butter, and oats until crumbly.
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the casserole.
- Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until the casserole is set and begins to pull away from the edges. If browning too quickly, cover with foil for the last 10 minutes.
- Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Drying the bread cubes ahead of time helps them soak up more custard and prevents sogginess.
- Use homemade or store-bought apple pie filling based on your preference.
- Great for make-ahead: assemble the night before and bake in the morning.
- Serve with maple syrup, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar for extra sweetness.
